GOOD WEB LINKS

The U.S Naval Observatory offers the official explanation of standard time. They provide links to an explanation of Universal Time, to the legal text of the U.S. Code for standard time, and to a map of world time zones. They also suggest a visit to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s “A Walk Through Time” exhibit, which I list next.

This whole Web site is interesting, but the section that’s most relevant to standard time is called “World Time Scales.” The essay here provides historical background on the eventual need for world time zones. It’s a brief and efficient presentation of what happened and why.

This Web site is the most attractive of the three because it includes photographs. Their discussion includes quite a bit of historic detail not mentioned in either of the government Web sites.
