This is the Department of Labor’s History of Labor Day. It tells us that the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and by 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers. Finally, in1894, Congress passed the legislation that made it a legal holiday everywhere.
